The SAF Industry in Catalonia

In September 2023, Vueling unveiled the report The SAF Industry in Catalonia: A Future Opportunity, developed by PwC. This document explores Catalonia's potential as a leader in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production, a key alternative for aviation decarbonisation.

SAFs can reduce CO2 emissions by 80% to 100%, a crucial element for the aviation sector, which accounts for 2%-3% of global emissions. As flight demand continues to rise, transitioning to cleaner fuels becomes essential.

The study highlights Catalonia as a strategic hub in Southern Europe, thanks to its location, access to renewable resources, and the importance of El Prat Airport as an economic driver. Under the right conditions, Catalonia could host four SAF production plants by 2050, generating €602 million annually in GDP and over 2,000 stable jobs.

This initiative would not only position Catalonia as a sustainability leader but also enable SAF exports to other regions, cementing its role in the global ecological transition.
